Fall has begun and it implies a great number of tasks to be taken care of before winter comes. In addition to storing terrace and garden furniture and scraping fallen leaves from trees, the inspection of the exterior lighting system should not be neglected. Indeed, very soon, our sunny hours will be shortened, and we will spend more time in the shadows.

We can offer you lighting solutions adapted to your needs: whether it is to enhance the beauty of buildings and their structures or to signal obstacles, access roads or stairs, safety and light pollution rules must be respected. The color and rendering of the light source should also be taken into consideration according to the needs of the use.

Nowadays, with the democratization of LED devices, it would be unthinkable to use a conventional source outside. Indeed, outdoor lighting must be reliable, maintenance-free and adapted to our winter temperatures. This way, you can ensure that you don't have to replace a defective luminaire in the cold of winter.

So how to choose the right light fixture for the right use?

The Wall Pack

The peripheral lighting of a building will be accomplished with a Wall Pack. It is a device capable of covering as much area as possible in the area near the building, for example: entrance, reserved parking space, sidewalk, loading dock, etc. Coming from a recognized manufacturer, most of these devices have an important feature in terms of light pollution. It is an optical system that directs light downwards and must not emit vertical radiation exceeding 90 degrees. These luminaires are referred to as full cutoff.

The Area Light

Another device that has this feature is the area light, usually installed on streetlights and used, as its name suggests, to illuminate large areas such as parking lots.

The Floodlight

On the other hand, a floodlight will be chosen to cover a more distant area, such as the boundary of a property, the back of a maneuver yard, an architectural element or a distant structure.

Photometric calculations

As a rule of thumb, a Wall Pack can cover an area twice as wide as it is long. If installed at a height of 4 meters, it can cover 16 meters in width and 8 meters in length, provided, of course, that it has the right power. In contrast, a projector has a more concentrated beam and illuminates twice as far as it is wide.

This is a very brief assessment. Lumen offers a photometric calculation service reserved for our customers and to confirm the requested result.
